The order of things

Edge first. Then the line.
Then the joint.

In Japan an apprentice learns one thing until his hands know it, and only then the next. The collection follows the same order.

  1. Sharpen first

An edge that slices, not crushes. Stones, backs and bevels, in two minutes a day.

    Vol. I
  2. Mark with a knife

A knife line your saw can't wander from. The story stick. Read the board before you cut.

    Vol. II
  3. Cut beside the line

Square ends, no tear-out, no splits, and no more boards in the scrap bin.

    Vol. II
  4. Join without a nail

Nine joints and six apprentice projects, from sawhorses to a low tea table.

    Vol. III

Meet the author

Hi, I'm Masao

I was born in Takayama, Japan. At fifteen I became a temple carpenter's apprentice, and for months I did not cut a single joint. I sharpened, every morning, until my edges passed my teacher's test.

For the last twenty years I have taught from my small shop near Portland, Oregon. Most woodworkers here were never shown the order of things. They blame their hands. Usually it is the edge, or the line.

These three books are everything from my videos, in the order I was taught. We work at a bench, at your height, not kneeling on the floor as I did. Every chapter has a gentle version for sore hands or a stiff back, and a box for left-handed woodworkers.

From my bench to yours. — Masao 林

Is it for you?

This is for you if…

  • Your chisels and planes crush the wood instead of slicing it, and you've stopped trusting your sharpening.
  • Your cuts wander off the line and your joints open up with gaps you have to hide.
  • You'd rather work quietly with hand tools than fill the garage with dust and noise.
  • You want to build things that hold for generations, without a single screw.

It's not for you if you want a quick jig that skips the practice. This is the slow way. It also happens to be the way that works.

Questions

Before you
decide

Do I need Japanese tools?

No. The method works with the chisels, planes and saws you already have. Vol. III shows you the Japanese tool kit and what each tool does, so if you ever buy one, you buy the right one.

Do I need power tools?

No. Everything is done by hand, at a bench. If you do use a machine on a board, the safety page tells you how to keep your hands clear.

My hands are stiff and my back complains. Can I still do this?

Yes. Every chapter has a gentle version for sore hands, a stiff back or a shorter day, and Vol. III has a chapter on setting your bench to your own height.

I've never sharpened properly. Where do I start?

Start with Vol. I. It begins with your edge inventory and shows you why the back of the blade comes first. Most people are sharp within the first week.

I'm left-handed. Does it work for me?

Yes. Every chapter has a box for left-handed woodworkers, and each book puts it all in one place at the back.

What exactly do I get?

The complete collection gives you all three volumes. Each volume is also sold on its own ($27, $47 and $87), but the collection gives you all three for $97 and saves you $64.

How do I receive it?

Right after payment you get your access link, on screen and by email. It's yours to keep, and there's nothing to wait for.

Can I read it on a tablet or computer? Can I print it?

Yes. It opens on any phone, tablet or computer. You can zoom the text as large as you like, or print the pages and cards at home and pin them up by the bench.

Is the payment secure?

Yes. You'll pay on a secure checkout page run by Payhip, a platform used by thousands of independent authors. Pay by card or PayPal. It's a one-time payment: no subscription.

What if it's not for me?

You're covered by a 7-day money-back guarantee. Ask for a refund within 7 days and you get every cent back. Just write to business@japanbench.com.
